Ep. 32: ICE Floods Indy as Government Abandons Flood Victims
On the newest episode of Naptown People’s Radio, co-host Dani Abdullah is joined by guest host and PSL comrade Lucas Lee to acknowledge a seemingly simple truth: there is rarely such a thing as a “slow news week” in Indianapolis. The past week was no exception.
In the Naptown Breakdown, Dani and Lucas cover: The widespread terror caused by ICE abductions across the city; organizer and educator Jonathan Roden’s recent Litigation Class at the Indy Liberation Center; and Common Unity 3: The Voice of the People, an annual gathering organized by Indianapolis’ first exoneree, Leon Benson and the Liberation Center, dedicated to educating and empowering people in the struggle against mass incarceration and the system that sustains it.
While the government is flush with cash when it comes to terrorizing our communities, it seems there isn’t any money to help victims of recent flooding. Dani sits down with organizer and Indy Liberation Store manager Rissa Wilson to discuss the devastating flooding that recently struck communities across Indiana. They discuss how Rissa’s landlord, Elizabeth Johnson of Penny A. Weed, LLC., is attempting to illegally evict them in the aftermath of the floods. This leads Dani and Rissa talk about the failures of city infrastructure, grassroots cleanup efforts, tenant unions, and the complete lack of meaningful response from the ruling class to protect working people from natural disasters.
But socialism teaches us that our power does not come from those at the top, it comes from us! The lessons of Jonathan Roden’s Litigation Class, combined with the successes of boots-on-the-ground organizing in our own communities, show that Indianapolis can stand up to the ruling class. Whether the struggle is against ICE, the prison system, landlords, or our fumbling local leadership, we have the power to fight back when we organize, educate, and stand together.
